B"H

Dear Parents,

What a great week at Kivun! We enjoyed exploring the story through Improv on Tuesday night and we are so happy that so many families joined us for the experience.

On Thursday, a special gift that we ordered for our families arrived and we are so happy that most of you got the beautiful plush puppets in a bag for Purim! I hope you use them to create performances for the holiday and beyond.

This year, more than ever before, I feel that our students really immersed themselves in the joyous experience of Purim. For two weeks, our students dressed up in costume, acted out the stories, watched puppet shows, made graggers, created their own puppets, baked Hamantaschen and discussed the inner meaning of Purim. We look forward to great celebrations on Purim and we feel they are prepared to celebrate the holiday, knowing its stories, customs and importance to our story as Jewish people today.

Wishing you all a happy Purim and a Shabbat Shalom!

 RECAPS OF THE LEARNING

Kindergarten

Tuesday, we played a fun game learning and experiencing the 4 Mitzvot of Purim, and learned they all start with the letter מ, which helped us remember them: Megilah, Mishloach Manot, Matanot L'Evyonim and Mishteh. We welcomed our new friend Yarden!

Thursday we reviewed Purim by making fun graggers, dressing up for cut the chocolate game, and revisiting the Purim characters.

First Grade

Tuesday, we learned the four Mitzvot of Purim. The students reenacted all four Mitzvot. They gave eachother Mishloach Manot, gave Tzedakah to the "poor", enjoyed delicious Hamantaschen and looked closely at a real Megillah with Morah Sarah.

Thursday, we continued learning the stories of the Tanach.  We met Yosef and discussed his special relationship with his father Yaakov.  The students created a giant coat of many colors, while they heard the story about Yosef's relationship with his brothers, who were very jealous!  We then renacted Yosef's two dreams with paper stars and stalks of wheat. We talked about how their jealousy caused them to sell Yosef as a slave. In the stars, we wrote about things we can do towards others that is the opposite of jealousy, how we can be happy for other people. We learned what happened to him in Potifar's house and how his wife accused him of doing something wrong to her, and Potifar threw Yosef into jail. Next week we will learn what happened while he was in the jail!

2nd Grade

Tuesday- What is the difference between laws and customs? We thought of different laws and customs and separated them into catagories, and then learned all about the laws- mitzvot- that we do on purim and the customs- minhagim- that we do, like dressing up and eating hamantashen. We had a relay race to see who can put the tzedaka in the bucket fastest, drink the grape juice with a bracha for the meal, get the mishloach manot to their friend the quickest, and see a real megillah! Then we decorated our graggers to use on Purim when we hear Haman's name in the Megillah!

Thursday- We reviewed what we learnt about Purim and made little clay figures of the things we learnt about to add to our Chagim shadow box. We got a sneak peek into what we will be doing for our Pesach Haggadah this year.

Third Grade

Tuesday, we played a really fun scavenger hunt using maps, the text of the Megillah and other sources to review the story. We also reviewed the four Mitzvot of Purim and discussed why we do these Mitzvot specifically on Purim. We recognized that all these Mitzvot are connected the joy that comes from helping others in need, and being together with other Jews.

Thursday, we made little Purim figurines from Sculpey for our Holiday memory box and we started to think about the Hagadah we will be starting after Pesach. The kids are excited to start thinking about the Hagadah they will help design!
